THE books of a Rugby man could be making their way to the big screen.

Derek Linster of Southey Road, has published two books telling the story of abuse and neglect he suffered at the hands of the Bethany Home for children in Dublin during the 1950s.

Derek said: “I think society needs a bit of hope at the moment and I want to give people, especially kids in care, that bit of inspiration they need to push on and find a better life.”

Derek is now retired and all his time is spent pushing the books, Hannah’s Shame and Destiny Unknown and more recently getting the film rolling. He contacted 500 film makers with digital copies of his book and one of the 19 replies he received caught his attention.

Screen writer, director and script editor Eleonora Volpe was amazed by Derek’s story and is now adapting the books into a screenplay to be pitched to film companies.

Elenora has taken on the project with enthusiasm and filming could start as early as next year with Rugby set to feature as one of the locations.

Derek said: “I think you have to accept it won’t be exactly how I picture it but I am going to be involved in the process because I want to make sure it’s as real as possible.

“If the day comes when I can sit down and watch the film adapted from my books I’d be gob-smacked. It’d be such an achievement for the illiterate boy from Ireland.”
