The Yeomen of the Guard of 30 years ago
Looking Back - Theatre
Rugby Operatic Society is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, with performances this week of The Yeomen of the Guard at Rugby Theatre.
And this picture may bring back some memories of when the society last performed the Gilbert & Sullivan opera, also at the Henry Street venue, in 1973. The picture belongs to Doreen Long, who, being the lead alto, played Dame Carruthers. With her (from left) are Roy Hallows, Andy Stewart, ?, Mervyn ?, Peter Urry, Mike Minton, ? and Eifion Lewis. The Yeomen of the Guard, set in the Tower of London in the 16th century, is on at Rugby Theatre until Saturday. The score is widely regarded as Sullivan’s finest. Call (01788) 541234 for tickets.
