PUPILS at Oakfield primary school in Rugby have started the new half term in a new multi-million pound building.

The school is the first to be built in the UK using a new standardised system called Sunesis, which uses off-the-shelf designs to reduce costs and construction time. The new building, which cost £2.2m and was built in just 32 weeks, will cater for 220 pupils. Compared to traditional design and build, standardised schools can be built for up to 30 per cent less.

Heather Fielding, headteacher, said: “This project has created an environment that will have a positive impact on our pupils’ learning. We were extremely pleased with the construction team who have listened to our needs and ideas from the beginning.”

Rugby MP Mark Pawsey, who opened the school on Monday, said: “It was great on the day to see both youngsters and their parents returning from the half term break with huge smiles on their faces.

“The building is the first of its type in the country and provides more accommodation for a given cost as well as providing the latest standards of energy efficiency.”

The school, in Oakfield Road, is also joining others in Warwickshire by becoming an academy in the coming months.

The sponsor is to be London-based trust Reach2. The organisation will have control over the school’s budget, teachers’ pay uniform, term dates and schooling hours.
