THE LOVING wives of both men targeted in our Last Hope appeal have paid tribute to 'fantastic' Advertiser readers - and have both have vowed: 'We're not giving up'.

So far you've helped raise about £2,500 for Rugby cancer sufferers Colin Howe and Russ Jones.

As reported, both men need the money to fund the drug Sutent, which they hope will fight the disease and prolong their lives.

And after already raising a series of fundraising events while the appeal continues, Colin's wife Susan said the battle with Warwickshire Primary Care Trust to obtain funding for the £3,500-a- month drug would continue.

Mrs. Howe, who lives with her husband in Gentian Way, Brownsover, said: "It's taken over our lives.

"I will never give up, but there are people who will give up and die - and that is so sad. But our marriage is strong and we will fight on regardless."

The PCT has denied both men - who could both die without the treatment - access to the drug, which is widely available to other parts of the country and is proven to help some patients.

Mr. Howe - who is suffering from Kidney Cancer - is waiting to hear if another appeal to the PCT is successful.

The couple, who have been married eight years, are hosting a series of fundraising events over the coming weeks.

A sponsored walk and run is being held around Draycote Water on Sunday, September 2.

Entry forms and more information are available by calling 0787 192 8644.

Meanwhile, Russ, 63, who suffers from a rare stomach cancer, has passed through one successful four-week trial of the drug.

The couple, of Elter Close, Brownsover - who could face selling their assets to fund treatment - recently enjoyed a holiday in Devon, only made possible by the 62-year-old's treatment.

Russ's wife of 41 years, Val, said: "It's so good to see him looking better.

"The support of our family and Advertiser readers we don't even know is so uplifting. My husband's life is so precious and people are dying because of PCT decisions and that is wrong, which is why we are fighting."

Anyone interested in donating to the appeal should send donations to Ken McErlain, Rugby Advertiser Charity Events, 2 Albert Street, Rugby CV21 2RS.

Please make cheques payable to Rugby Advertiser Charity Event.
