IT’S Shakespeare but not as you know it!
Following on from the success of The Years Between, Diary of a Nobody and In Praise of Love, the next production in Royal and Derngate’s Made in Northampton season of plays is the riotous Hamlet! The Musical, which bursts onto the Royal stage from Friday, May 6 to Saturday, May 21.
The underlying theme of the season is great British writers, so where better to turn than the great bard Shakespeare himself.
In the hands of adaptors Alex Silverman, Timothy Knapman and Edward Jaspers, the tragedy of Hamlet has been re-invented as a joyous and critically-acclaimed comedy romp, which wowed Edinburgh audiences at last year’s Festival Fringe, winning the prestigious Musical Theatre Matters award for Audience Favourite Musical.
As co-production between Royal & Derngate and Eleanor Lloyd Productions, Hamlet! The Musical will enjoy its first large-scale staging, with Jack Shalloo reprising his role as the hapless Danish prince under the direction of Ryan McBride.
Venturing where other musicals fear to tread, with its foot-tapping frolics, Hamlet! The Musical will entertain Shakespearean purists and novices alike. All the well-known characters are present and correct, from the sweet Prince Hamlet himself, to crazed Ophelia and the treacherous Rosencrantz and Gildenstern, all galloping through a host of hilarious songs.
Hamlet! The Musical can be seen at Royal and Derngate in advance of a national tour. Tickets are priced from £27 to £12, with concessions available. Tickets for under 26s are £11 for all performances. And it’s not too late to take advantage of the subscription scheme which offers significant discounts if you book for three or more Made In Northampton productions.
