Theatre Royal and Century cinema

Looking for the other cinema pictures, I came across these. The first is captioned the Theatre Royal in Railway Terrace in 1899. It was built in Mr Liddington’s field in 1890.

The Century Cinema in Bank Street in 1961

The Century Cinema in Bank Street in 1961

The other is the cinema in Bank Street, which became the Century in 1955. Luckily the films being screened can give us an exact date. Greengage Summer starring Kenneth More and Danielle Darrieux, His and Hers and Ticket to Paradise were all released in 1961.

There’s also a mention of Deadly Record in the small print of the poster, from 1959, I think.

The cinema first opened as the Picture House in 1920, became the Regent in 1930, the Regent Theatre in 1936 and finally the Century. It was later a Kwik Save supermarket.
