Burton XI Cricket Team about 1900
The cricketers in this family team were related and all had the surname Burton. It was brought in by Barbara Measey (nee Burton) whose grandfather Charles Harry Burton is fifth from the left on the back row. She is particularly interested in their opposition the day this was taken - the Arnold Wise School & Staff - and wonders if anyone knows more about it. The game was played at School Playing Field, Bilton Road, Rugby, which suggests the school was there.
She remembers her grandfather lived in Wheatfield Road, Bilton and was a tailor who made things for Rugby School. He once made her a pushalong toy, like a little horse, from the huge empty cotton reels. The Burtons (back from left were) Frederick Thomas, Percy George, John Henry, Richard Washbrook the schoolmaster-umpire, Charles Henry, Frederick Middleton, Walter and Joseph. (Front row) Joseph, the scorer, Charles, John, Joseph the former Worcestershire wicket keeper and Herbert Leonard.
