Rugby Town FC 1913-14
This picture has recently been given to Rugby Town FC by a neighbour of club volunteer Ray Leeson and brought in to Memory Lane by club president Peter Kilvert. Pencil writing on the back of the cardboard surround says ‘Harris, Victoria Inn’, which suggests it may have been framed to hang in the pub. It has now found a new home in the board room at Butlin Road.
Those pictured were: (back from left) H Norman, J Ollier, J Weller, AGH Woods (hon sec), T Dunkley, VG Sparks, G Cluett. (Second row): WH Greatorex, H Louch, E Tomlinson, S Price, W Rice, B Moore, C Atkins, W Luckman, J Copson, S Munns, W Harris, H Sparks. (Seated) J Lewis (trainer), R Humphreys, C Stevens (capt), F Leeson, W Tomlinson (vice-capt), O Varnish, W Marks (trainer). (Front) J Bailey and B Austin. The cups they had won were the Coventry & North Warwickshire League 1st Division Cup and the Rugby Hospital Cup. It’s sad to think just a few months after this was taken most of these young men would have been involved in the first world war. Although it’s exactly 100 years old, we hope there may be a few relatives who recognise the names of those pictured.
