Rugby’s old cinemas

I thought we might have a look back at a few of Rugby’s old cinemas this week, starting with the picture above. You might just recognise the picture above as the steps to Rugby Theatre. At the time it was taken though, it would have been the Empire Picture Palace. I think this was taken in 1937. It was also the Scala Cinema at some point too. The building in Henry Street became Rugby Theatre in 1949.

Below right, you might recognise what is now The Bank bar. The Picture House in Bank Street opened in 1920 and became Regent Cinema ten years later. By 1936 it had become the Regent Theatre and then in 1955 it was renamed The Century. As a child I remember it being a Kwik Save supermarket. The other picture will also be very familiar, although of course it is no longer there and the site at the bottom of North Street is now a car park.
