Dave Smart has come up with a selection of pictures for us this week.
He now lives near Reading, but went to school at St Matthew’s Secondary Modern in Oliver Street. (He’s also sent in a picture of their rugby team which I’ll print next week). Next to the school was J Parnell and Son, the biggest local contractor, who employed all their own tradesmen. Mr Smart wanted to be a carpenter and was taken on as a 15-year-old apprentice in 1959. One day and a couple of evenings each week he would attend the East Midlands College of Further Education, which was in Eastlands Road and his first picture shows the workshop. He is in the white shirt on the left, working on a staircase. The apprenticeship was four years and he stayed on an extra year.
