Long Lawford School, 1950s
This picture has come all the way from Cornwall, courtesy of Christine Hartles, who thought we might enjoy seeing this group of Long Lawford School pupils in the mid 1950s.
Christine says it was taken at the time of the May Queen ceremony and they were in the “great” percussion band, although she can’t remember what instrument she played.
“We all wore our best clothes, the girls mostly with ribbons in their hair and some with Angora boleros, fashion of the day. I notice one poor boy, he looks as if he didn’t want to be part of the occasion!” she adds.
Lots of the children at the school came from the RAF station, locally known as the RAF Camp, at Lawford Heath.
Standing, at the back, from the left, is Mrs Wynn-Jones, wife of the headmaster. In the centre, Mrs Parish, teacher and to the right, Mr Smith, teacher.
Front row, from left, Robert Adams, Jean Chapman, Maureen Robertson, ?
Second row, from left, Carol ? (RAF child) ? Desiree Bennett, ?, Christine and Maureen Matthews,
Third row, from left, Maureen Marshall (an RAF child) Rita Dumbleton, Betty Collin, ?, ?.
