Looking Back: Memories of a boxer

editorial image

Thanks to George Reid for this picture of the Rugby Corinthians Boxing Club taken around the time it was formed in 1959-60.

It was based at the Woolpack Inn in Union Street.

ABA champions Joe Leeming and Billy Barber trained there, and Johnny Williams, a British heavyweight champion, was among the trainers. Mr Reid recalls with sadness that the club closed because the landlord wanted the room for a disco. He said: “We fought all around the Midlands, mostly Coventry, at the Drill Hall, Coventry, Rugby Co-op Hall, Rootes, Stoke Ex-Servicemen’s Club, Radford Police Club, Alfred Herbert’s, Coventry Irish and Fisher Birmingham at the Midland Counties ABA. Some of us also fought for Warwickshire County.”

Pictured in the back row (with questions marks for unknown names) are Jimmy Callahan, Paddy ?, L Steward (secretary), Alf Hutchinson, ? and George Reid . In the front row are ?, ?, young Smithy, ?, ?, young Spinks, Jimmy Loughrey and Glen Powell. Let us know if you can fill in the names: editorial@rugbyadvertiser.co.uk
