Market Place 1954
Do you recognise this scene from about 1954? The three pillars are still there, but the main building has been replaced with one of two storeys, although there is still an apex end . This shop, in Market Place next to St Andrew’s church, was one of three owned by Stanley Fishlock, whose daughter Eileen Walker brought in this picture.
The shop sold electrical goods, musical instruments and records. There was another down Albert Street, which was also the repair depot and one on the parade in Hillmorton Road, where his family lived in the flat above, before moving to Clifton.
Mr Fishlock, who was 90 when he died in 1992, started the business in the 1940s and took early retirement about 1960.
The shops did well as Mr Fishlock, a Salvation Army officer as a young man, was known for his honesty, high standards and reliability.
