AEI tennis players 1979

Recognise anyone on this picture? It is another which has been kindly shared with us by Hilary Curley, from her father Geoff Tye’s collection.

This was taken in the 1979 season when the AEI first and second tennis teams both gained promotion to Division 1 of the Rugby and District Lawn Tennis League.

Although Hilary didn’t have any details to go with it, Mike Yeats, who many of you will know as a director of Rugby Town Football Club and will have spotted in the picture, has provided lots of information, including all the names.

Back row (from left) David Steele, Pete Flavell, Les Pearce and Mike Yeats.

(Front row): Geoff Tye, Ray Meek, John Peacock and Steve Lucas.

The picture was taken at the AEI Recreation ground on Hillmorton Road, the home of the AEI Tennis Club for many years.

When planning permission was given in early 2000 for a housing development on part of the site, which unfortunately led to the demolition of the existing Sports and Social Club and tennis courts, it left the club without a home.

But in 2004, thanks to the committee of the LMRCA Club - who coincidentally at this time were considering resurfacing two unused hard courts at the back of the Railway Club - they agreed for the AEI club members to relocate.

It enabled the club to continue playing in the Rugby District and Coventry Tennis Leagues under the new LMRCA (Rugby) Tennis Club name.

A centenary celebration of the club was held in October 2011 at the LMRCA Club in Hillmorton Road and attended by past and present members.
