War and peace in the city of reconciliation
Caught in the Crossfire, an exhibition running at Coventry’s Herbert Gallery, explores how artists grapple with the subject of war.
The exhibition take visitors on a challenging journey from the home front to the frontline and back again, as seen through the eyes of artists, soldiers and people affected by conflict. Guests will travel through divided lands, debate the role of protest art, explore the aesthetics of violence and machinery of war, and reflect upon the aftermath of war where hope emerges and lives are rebuilt. A section of the exhibition focuses on the work of Kennardphillipps made in response to the invasion and occupation of Iraq.
On show will be historical works alongside pieces by contemporary artists, featuring Banksy, Peter Kennard, (Kennardphillipps), Langlands and Bell and War Boutique. Artists Peter Kennard and Cat Picton Phillipps will be carrying out a residency at the Herbert until February 17.
Events included in the exhibition include a free curator’s tour on Saturday February 23, an artist’s introduction on Tuesday Febriary 19, a film screening on Tuesday March 5 and a talk by artist and graphic designer Jonathan Barnbrook onThursday March 14.
Caught in the Crossfire is a Heritage Lottery Fund Collecting Cultures project in partnership with Wolverhampton Art Gallery. New acquisitions supported by V&A Purchase grant, Art Fund, Henry Moore Foundation. A creative and insightful series of events have been programmed to complement this exhibition.
