PLANS to demolish Tesco and rebuild a much bigger supermarket have been approved.

The supermarket giant is hoping to replace its current Leicester Road store with a Tesco Extra and 273 parking spaces, making it nearly twice the size of the current one.

The company claims the new store will create 150 jobs.

The two-storey store would be built on a 'stilt design' to allow car parking underneath, with the main entrance located on the upper level which would be located by lifts, a staircase and a moving travelator.

The extra floorspace would allow Tesco to sell more household and food items, as well as provide a coffee shop/cafe, wider aisles and extra checkouts. It is thought the new store could be open by 2011.
