IT MAY look a touch old-fashioned these days - but this hefty steam locomotive was once the future.
Advertiser reader Keith Thursfield took this picture on Saturday morning as a No 70000 “Britannia” passed through. She was built in 1951 as the first of 999 British Railways standard steam locomotives for the ‘new age’ - designed to incorporate the best modern practice from the four former railway companies. When new, she was exhibited at the Festival of Britain in 1951. She was on a “Cathedrals Express” charter train to Chester.
