A GANG of robbers dressed in balaclavas used a sledge hammer to smash their way into a jewellery shop in town this morning (Monday).

Police are investigating the robbery that happened at Tarratts - previously Thomas Cleaver - in Regent Street, Rugby at around 11.35am this morning.

Early witness reports indicate that three men wearing dark clothing and balaclavas used a sledge hammer to break a window and steal watches and jewellery from the shop.

No-one was injured during the incident.

The men drove off in a black BMW, however minutes later they got into an Audi parked nearby in Holbrook Avenue.

The Audi was involved in a collision in Hollowell Way, Brownsover at which point the three men ran from the vehicle.

Following a search of the area, assisted by the force helicopter, one male was arrested and is currently awaiting questioning by officers.

A quantity of jewellery was also recovered.

Police are continuing to search the area around Brownsover for the outstanding two males.

One is described as a white male who is well built and bald headed.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses to the robbery at the jewellers, the changing of the vehicles in Holbrook Ave or who saw someone run from the vehicle in Hollowell Way, Brownsover to please contact Local Investigation officers on 01926 415000 quoting incident 122 of 3 September.
