THE transformation of an old Brownsover pub into a supermarket has been completed today (Friday).
The new Tesco Express opened at 8am on the site of the old Merry Monk in Helvellyn Way. The pub closed in May last year, when it was described as “the focal point and hub of the estate” by Cllr David Cranham.
Plans for a Tesco Express in Bilton caused concern last year. Independent shops feared they would lose trade, but opinions on its effect on the area were split a year later.
Bilton’s Tesco will be open seven days a week from 6am until 11pm. The company says it will create 20 jobs.
A spokesman said: “We believe an Express in this location will give people additional choice and enable many to get the everyday bits and pieces they need.”
Shop staff will present a cheque for £500 to a charity on the opening day. The recipient has not yet been identified.
Manager Justyna Baran said: “My team and I are looking forward to welcoming our customers into the new store and we hope that Tesco will become a key part of the local community.”
