A MAJOR car dealership in Rugby has closed.

Sutton Park Renault in Railway Terrace shut its doors to customers this week.

The showroom and forecourt were cleared after bosses at Sutton Park decided not to renew the lease on the property.

It has not been revealed how many staff have been made redundant in the move.

Dean Fulton, group managing director, said: “It was the end of the lease.

“We just decided not to renew it. We looked at the situation and decided that’s the decision we wanted to make internally.”

A notice has been put in the showroom window advising customers of the closure and stating that business would be transferred branches in Warwick and Coventry.

Mr Fulton said: “We made staff aware of the situation. “Wherever possible staff have been offered alternative positions within the company.

“Some have taken them and some have declined.”

He added that he did not have the figures available to say how many employees had opted for redundancy.

Sutton Park customers in Rugby said they were ‘shocked’ by the closure.

One even said it might deter her from buying a Renault car in the future.

Rugby customers have however been reassured by staff at the neighbouring Warwick branch, which says it is to offer a pick-up and drop-off service for customers booking a service, repair or MoT.

All phone lines have been automatically diverted from Rugby to Warwick.
