OVER a mile of pennies has been collected by fundraisers in Yelvertoft for Cancer Research UK.

Villagers Liz Lowther and Jane Walker are running the Great South Run next month, and to help boost funds the pair asked villagers to donate their spare penny coins in the hope of getting enough to lay them side by side to make a mile-long line. The mile was assembled at Yelvertoft village hall by volunteers last weekend. Liz said the pair had been overwhelmed by the villagers’ generosity after the local school, church and other organisations chipped in.

“We’re very grateful to everyone who’s donated or helped out in any way. The support from local organisations has been overwhelming. We’re still collecting funds but so far have managed to raise well over £1,000.”
