Rugby’s got many claims to fame as a railway town but it has broken new ground with the arrival of a Blackpool tram as a rather appropriate choice of outdoor classroom at Brooke School.
Early risers in Overslade Lane on a recent Saturday would have seen the remarkable sight of Centenary tram 643 arriving to become part of its newly-created beach school.
Head Chris Pollitt said it was an exciting addition: “The school already has a large forest school, bushcraft area and a large working school farm which the children have regular access to as part of the curriculum.”
The beach school will add to the range of lessons Brooke can offer its pupils, who have a range of special needs and the school will celebrate its arrival with a special event on Saturday.
They will be joined by all the people who helped make it possible, including Tesco, Groundwork, the DHL Foundation and Colas Rail – and a number of special guests.
