Alcohol seized in motorway junction blitz

A HUGE haul of beer and wine has been seized in Crick.

A continuing operation by HM Revenue and Customs to crackdown on alcohol smuggling has led to the seizure of around 10,000 cans of beer and 760 bottles of wine, along with a Mercedes Sprinter van and a truck.

The haul was uncovered near Crick, at Junction 18 of the M1 on Thursday last week (January 21).

The revenue loss on the goods through unpaid duty is around 7,102.

The beer seized included Carling, Stella Artois, Fosters and Polish brands.

Jennie Kendall, spokeswoman for HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), said: "We have active and effective teams operating across the Midlands to deter and disrupt those dealing in illicit alcohol.

"We will seize the goods and individuals may face criminal prosecution. This illegal trade has a devastating effect on legitimate retailers having to compete with black market traders."

She added: "We would appeal to local people and businesses to join us in the fight against crime and encourage anyone with information relating to illegally imported goods or tax evasion and fraud to contact the Customs Hotline on 0800 59 5000 or email: customs.hotline@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk"

No arrests have currently been made. Investigations are ongoing pending potential criminal proceedings.
