Double vision, double the fun
Being a parent is the toughest yet most rewarding job in the world.
But imagine the moment when the pregnancy scan reveals two heartbeats.
That’s two lots of nappies, double the toys and clothes, two lots of relentless feeds and twice as much screaming in the night.
Carolyn Hubbard and Carol Crowley run Rugby Twins or More Club.
“Life with twins has been an eye-opener and it is completely different from anything I experienced with my first child, Felix,” said Carolyn, who lives in Bitteswell and is mother to Ziggy and Cozmo.
“I thought I would be at an advantage by having a test run with him, but that wasn’t to be the case. Nothing can prepare you for having two little people depending on you and wanting your attention, both at the same time.”
She said the two have definitely learned from an early age how to share.
“I also don’t go anywhere in a hurry any more,” she added.
“Everything with multiples takes time, but that suits me down to the ground, as I don’t want to rush through this whole fantastic experience. Twins are often referred to as ‘double trouble’ but the way I see it is ‘Double the fun” and we certainly have plenty of that!”
She said life with twins is never dull.
Carolyn added: “I feel so lucky to have Ziggy and Cosmo in my life, no day is ever dull. They are affectionate, lively and entertaining boys and seeing the bond between them grow is amazing, but you do have to have eyes in the back of your head and be able to out run them at a moment’s notice.
“Their birthdays will always be a celebration in our house and this year was no exception, with 45 people invited to their second birthday party, who knows how many will be coming when they are 18!”
Twins or More of Rugby is a group that was set up in 2004 to help and support parents, friends and carers of multiple births.
Carolyn said: “Carol and I took over the club as we feel it’s an important lifeline that needed to continue. We meet every Monday at Rugby Methodist Church, Russelsheim Way, from 10am - 11.30am.”
Parents pop in for a cup of tea and a chat while the children play. The group currently has members with twins and triplets, from birth to four years old.
“We also welcome expectant mums of multiples to come along and see us, as what better way to prepare yourself than by meeting people who have been through it all and who can offer valuable advice,” added Carolyn.
“The club is going from strength to strength, but members are constantly stopping people in the street and guiding them to our club, as it seems that not everyone knows about us.”
The club is mainly made up of mums and grandmas with their twins or triplets.
This year they are branching out to get dads and partners involved too.
Carolyn said: “In the summer we had a family picnic which was a great success and then more recently we had our first family Christmas party which had an amazing turnout with 11 sets of twins and a set of triplets.”
