EDITOR'S VIEWPOINT: Racists...it's time to grow up

I think it is important that people who use racial abuse in our society should be receive severe penalties.

I applaud Judge James Pyke for jailing for three months, a man who used a Nazi salute and racial abuse against a shopkeeper of apparent Asian descent.

While I am in full support of national pride - hence the FREE St. George's Day flag we are promoting - I would hope that everyone living here should join the celebration and be welcomed to do so, whatever their ethnic or religious origins. Nationalists who argue that this country should only be for white people of English origin, are simply small-minded idiots who need to grow up.

Actually I think research of one's ancestry might just show how truly cosmopolitan we all really are. Any modern society, whether or not they all want to be English, is made up of a vast range of world backgrounds and should be embraced.

Personally, I find it interesting, educating and illuminating and I welcome it.

YOU may remember my comment last week about why the police should tell a farmer, who had been victim of an arson, not to speak to the press.

The farmer had stopped thieves stealing fuel and the very next day his home was set fire to. The farmer had been willing to talk to a reporter but was then told not to speak with the Press and refused to tell his story. I explained that I was angry that the police should interfer and hinder us, when they expect us to carry appeals for witnesses to incidents.

I thought you might like to know, that even though we have run another appeal for witnesses on a separate story, for them, I have had no response from the police...
