Editor's Viewpoint: Why not walk naked?
We have had a lot of reaction over the past week about the difference between flashing and ... walking naked.
This follows our story where a woman, who had been walking along the canal towpath, 'experienced' a naked rambler.
She regarded it as being confronted by a flasher, but we have received on letter which claims that naked rambling cannot in any way be considered 'flashing' and, in fact, not an offence - I am seeking legal clarication. That's not because I feel inclined to participate, which I'm sure will be a relief to many, but I just can't imagine that it's ok to wander through the town centre stark naked, frightening the horses but not offending the sensitivities of shoppers!
However, as you might have guessed over years of reading this column, I generally think there are far to many rules...
I also think people can get quite phobic about their bodies... or rather other people's bodies, and amongst other things, by that I mean, breast-feeding in public places.
I think people are becoming obsessed with sex crimes, seeing the potential for it around every corner.
I would not seek to diminish that seriousness when it happens, but actually rape and other sex crimes are not a common feature of our street corners. Not that it's comfort, but it seems you are more likely
to be knifed than sexually abused.
So, while I would not be interested in it myself (I don't appreciate hysterical laughter), I would defend the right of others to participate.. with certain exceptions.
I'm sorry, but I might become a little confused in amongst Tesco's finest array melons and corgettes.
