'Emergency' phone taken from pupil

A FATHER has criticised Harris School in Rugby for confiscating his teenage son's 'emergency lifeline' phone.

Clive Wright, of Lytham Road, Rugby said his 14-year-old son Caeron is not safe without the device, which has been confiscated until the end of term.

Mr. Wright, who is shortly expecting a hospital operation, said the phone acts as a 'lifeline' between the pair.

He told the Advertiser: "I phoned Caeron during an assembly to tell him I couldn't pick him up from school. One of the teachers spotted him answer it and confiscated the phone.

"That was my fault - Caeron did nothing wrong. He answered the phone, said he had to hang up and that was it.

"We moved to Rugby due to a family break up in which my son received violent threats.

"Various authorities have stressed the importance of my son having a phone on him at all times so I know he is safe.

"I am also expecting to be called into hospital any day for an operation and when that happens I will need to call Caeron so he can come home and look after his little sister.

"My son only uses this phone to talk to me - it wasn't as if he was texting mates or phoning girls. It's his lifeline and he needs it back."

Mr. Wright added that he was also unhappy with the school's offer to replace it with another confiscated phone until Easter.

"I just don't think the school understands the gravity of our situation. They've been very unsympathetic," he added.

"Giving him another phone is worthless because his mobile uses a speed dial system which has been specially programmed in.

"I understand and accept the school's policy on mobiles but this is unfair. I'm a single parent and I can't just go out and buy him another one."

Steve Dobson, the school's Head Teacher said: "We have a policy in place that states phones can not be used in school time which has been breeched.

"However, in this situation we offered another phone as a compromise to ensure the safety of the child.

"That is actually an exception to our rules but in this case the father has declined to accept it."
