Family's relief after suspected killer is caught

THE heartbroken family of murdered teacher Lindsay Hawker has spoken on their relief that the only suspect in the case has finally been caught after a manhunt lasting more than two and a half years.

Tatsuya Ichihashi was arrested in Japan on Tuesday, bringing a huge sense of relief to Lindsay's family who have worked tirelessly since her death to catch her killer.

Lindsay, 22, of Brandon, near Rugby, was found dead in a bath of sand in Japan in March 2007.

Her father Bill Hawker said: "We are very relieved that Tatsuya Ichihashi has been caught.

"We'd like to thank the public and press for helping bring him to justice.

"We are now on the road to finally getting justice for Lindsay.

"It's been two and a half years of hard work but it's been worth it.

"It's a big sense of relief."

Lindsay was discovered on a fourth-floor balcony in an apartment block after she was reported missing the day before.

She had been in Japan for five months teaching at a school in Tokyo.

When police approached Ichihashi - who lived in the flat where Lindsay was found - he ran away and has been on the run ever since.

Ichihashi, 30, has undergone extensive plastic surgery to chance his looks but was arrested as he tried to get a ferry out of the city of Osaka.

He was recognised by a fellow passenger days after police released photos showing how he was likely to look.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We can confirm that the only suspect in this case, Tatsuya Ichihashi, has been found and is now in police custody. We are grateful to the Japanese police for their efforts. We remain in close contact with the Hawker family."
