Firework prank nearly sets house on fire

A HOUSE was nearly set on fire after a firework was posted through a letterbox in Rugby.

The firework set fire to the rug but the owners of the house in Wood Street saw the danger and were able to put it out before it spread.

Police said the incident, which happened on Saturday, was just one of a few that could have caused serious problems.

Officers also had a report of a garage being set alight in Binley Woods, after a firework was thrown into the premises in Elm Close at about 8pm on Friday (October 26).

Strategic Support Sergeant Kate Jackson said: "The people seen running away from the Wood Street incident were not youngsters so it would appear that these incidents are not just confined to children."

*All 15 shops in Rugby that were targeted by police in a crackdown on selling alcohol and fireworks to underage children passed the test.

Officers sent in underage youngsters but all of the shopkeepers refused to serve them.

This is a marked improvement from previous tests, when pubs and shops have been cautioned for serving alcohol to minors.
