'How I lost millions and took on the mafia'

A RUGBY businessman has published a book recalling his 'crazy' adventures in Russia which included making and losing millions and being threatened by the Moscow mafia.

Matthew Francis, 34, journeyed east eight years ago with the aim of giving western-style business advice to Russian companies.

His book 'Ruskie: Beers, Bears and Babushkas' chronicles Matthew's helter-skelter business deals and catastrophic romantic liaisons.

Matthew, of Mellish Road, said: "It was a crazy period in my life. I met so many colourful people and made and lost millions.

"There are many hilarious memories but also times when I feared for my

life.

"When I came home three years ago and told my friends what I'd been up to they all said - wow you must write a book!"

Matthew was inspired to go to Russia after being told by a former girlfriend that it was 'a land of opportunity' where vast amounts of

money could be made.

He added: "I was a young naive man with nothing to lose so I thought why not. But things soon spiralled out of control.

"I was offered contracts worth $4 million and one night I was threatened by a mafia member who told me to pay him $150,000 a year or else.

"My book is a true light-hearted story of love, wealth and success. It reveals the real Russia."

Matthew will be signing copies of the book at Rugby Library in Little Elborow Street on Saturday (11am - 2pm), Hunts Bookshop in High Street on June 27 (11am - 2pm) and LA Fitness in Webb Ellis Road on June 30 (6-9pm) and July 4 (11am - 2pm).

The book is also available online at www.authorhouse.co.uk.
