Nearly 11,000 homes on the way

MASS development to the north and east of Rugby will bring 7,500 new homes.

Plans have now been made public to increase the town's population by 30,000 by 2026 to meet Government targets.

If they are approved on August 18, it will be one of the most significant stages in Rugby's history.

As expected, the majority of the new homes - 6,200 - will be accommodated on the former BT mast site near Hillmorton.

A further 1,300 are being planned for the land west of Leicester Road parallel to the new Coton Meadows housing estate.

Rugby Borough Council also hope to find a further 3,000 or more through smaller developments.

And it has identified the south-west of the town as an area for long term growth - either before or after the 2026 deadline.

The Government wants three million new homes built across the country by 2026, with 360,000 allocated for the West Midlands.

Most of this growth will be concentrated on the major urban areas of Birmingham, the Black Country, Stoke, Solihull and Coventry, but 10,800

have been allocated to Rugby.

However, Whitehall has announced that it wants to increase the number for the whole of the West Midlands - which could mean a further increase for Rugby.

Cllr. Neil Campbell, Cabinet Member for Economy, Development and Culture, said: "The Government has already said that it intends to increase the growth figure for the West Midlands.

"We don't know what this means for Rugby so we're not going to allocate land for an unknown level of growth.

"However, the Core Strategy does indicate a general direction of growth that may be used as a starting point when the actual numbers of houses are known.

"It's not up to us how many houses the Government decides should be built in Rugby, but we can decide where they should go and what sort of Borough we want Rugby to be.

"We've already asked local people about the type of Borough they want to live in and we've taken their views into account, but we'd really like to know what they think of the Core Strategy."

If approved on August 18, the Preferred Option Core Strategy will be published for public consultation in September.
