Pensioner targeted by bogus police officer

A TERRIFIED elderly woman in Rugby had her bag stolen by a heartless man pretending to be a police officer who then locked her in her own home.

The man approached the 86 year old woman while she was putting some rubbish out at her home in the Ashlawn Road area of Rugby and told her he was a plain clothes policeman and that he'd seen something suspicious.

The woman asked for proof that he was a policeman but he again stated he was an officer and walked into the hallway of her home, pushing her out the way.

The thief stole a black bag from the hallway and left but he took the door keys with him and locked the woman inside the house, leaving her trapped.

The woman, who was shaken up but not injured, raised the alarm and has since given a description of the man to the police.

The burglar is white, in his 20s, 5ft 5ins tall, slim build with short dark brown hair and he was wearing a dark coloured zip up jacket.

A police spokesperson said: "All police officers and staff working for Warwickshire Police carry a warrant card or photographic identity which is produced when attending an address.

"Anyone wanting to check on the validity of a Warwickshire Police officer should call (01926) 415000.

Anyone witnesses about the incident, which happened on Wednesday last week at around 10pm, or anyone with information can call PC Beverley Knott at Rugby police Station on (01788) 541111 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
