Raids in Rugby lead to six arrests

RAIDS in Rugby have resulted in six arrests of people for related offences including possession of class A drugs and conspiracy to supply class A drugs.

Police in Rugby have worked hard over recent months to gather evidence against people using two premises in the town for drug-related activities.

Officers from the Offender Management Unit (OMU) have made arrests and four are currently remanded in custody awaiting trial, the other two are on police bail.

The two premises in question are in Avenue Road, New Bilton and Oxford Street, Benn.

The continual use of these premises over the past six months for drug taking and selling has created much distress for local residents and serious nuisance, anti-social behaviour and criminal activities have all been evident as a direct result of the types of people visiting these addresses.

Officers from various departments within Rugby police worked together to achieve a Closure Order on both premises under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003.

DS Henry Scutt from the Offender Management Unit provided evidence of drug-related criminal activity and PS Dafydd Goddard from the Rugby Town West SNT gathered and provided evidence of anti-social behaviour in and around the addresses.

All evidence was collated by the force solicitor and was subsequently

presented at court where the order was granted.

Under the direction of PS Matt Humphriss who leads the Priority

Policing Area team, both premises have been boarded up and access will not be allowed for a period of three months.

Police hope it will send out a message to the criminal fraternity who persistently used the premises for illegal drugs use, that such behaviour will not be tolerated and police will use all powers at their disposal to deal with both the people and the property. Offenders can expect to lose both their freedom and premises if behaviour of this type and on this scale is displayed.

Inform the police if you think premises in your area are used for illegal drug-related activities. They say they will do all they can to prevent, detect and ultimately stop such activities from affecting people's quality of life.
