Thieves target 86-year-old poppy collector
AN 86-YEAR-OLD war veteran selling poppies had his money stolen in a callous broad daylight attack in the town centre.
Former Colour Sergeant Lionel Broughton had collected about 250 when he was suddenly crowded by passers-by in North Street.
Seconds later he realised that thieves had taken his money.
But despite his ordeal, Lionel was back out again the next day, collecting in memory of those who gave their lives in battle.
"I could have said I do not want to collect anymore," said Lionel.
"But we lost so many people in the wars and if I had given up, it would have let them all down and let the thieves win.
"It does make you wonder about the people who do this but I will not give up."
Staff from the Rugby Advertiser were at the scene just after the attack happened and managed to help a stunned Lionel.
Police and BID Rangers are currently scanning through CCTV images to catch the culprits.
Talking about the theft minutes afterwards at about 2.45pm on Thursday, Lionel - who served in World War Two at the age of 17 - added: "I was just about to knock off for the day when people started gathering around me and then suddenly I realised the money had gone.
"I think most of the people genuinely wanted poppies and the thieves saw an opportunity.
"I just could not believe it had happened because the money was right next to me."
The theft happened outside the Clock Towers Shopping Centre entrance in North Street at about 2.45pm last Thursday (October 30).
