A FORMER headteacher of Rugby High School turned author returned to town to launch her first novel.

Niki Phillips, who the was headteacher at the high school from 1978 to 1988, held the book launch at Rugby Library.

She has spent the last five and a half years writing the publication - The Liffey Flows On By.

It is her first published book.

Mrs Phillips, who was also a Warwickshire county councillor representing Rugby from 1989 to 1993, said: “It was lovely. Lots of my old friends came and staff who I worked with. The current headteacher [of Rugby High] Charlotte Marten also came. I was so pleased to see her.”

MP Mark Pawsey officially opened the book launch event.

The Liffey Flows On By is a family saga of love, tragedy and war set in Ireland, where Niki grew up, in the early 1900s.

Mrs Phillips said: “Everyone who has read it says it’s a real page turner. I left them on the banks in 1946 so everyone says I should write a sequel! We’ll see.”
