WARWICKSHIRE Police Authority has appointed a new chairman.

Phil Robson has taken over with immediate effect from outgoing chairman Ian Francis.

Retired in 2001 after 11 years as Warwickshire’s Chief Probation Officer, Phil Robson was a member of the National Parole Board and the Chief Officer responsible for setting up the County Youth Offending Team.

He took the national lead for information management on behalf of the Association of Chief Officers of Probation and was commissioned to produce the National Probation Service Information Management Strategy in 2002.

He ran his own management consultancy between 2001 and 2008, specialising in criminal justice and social welfare issues.

Phil is an Independent Member of Warwickshire Police Authority and is also the stream lead for Investigation and Strategic Planning.

He was appointed to Warwickshire Police Authority in 2003.

Speaking of his appointment, Phil said: “I am delighted to be appointed as the new chair of Warwickshire Police Authority.

“I am committed to ensuring that Warwickshire Police continue to protect our communities from harm.

“People in Warwickshire have a police force and authority they should be extremely proud of. Since 2006 Warwickshire has seen crime fall by 27.4 per cent. Achieving such fantastic decreases in the current economic climate is no small achievement. This has been down to some really hard work by our entire workforce in conjunction with local partners and communities.

“In order to better protect communities from harm, the authority has once again set the force some challenging targets for 2011-12 and I am sure every resource available will be used to focus on tackling those people who cause our communities the most harm and areas of the county most affected by crime and disorder.”

He added: “I would like to praise Ian Francis who has been a member of the authority since 1994 and chair for two years. His excellent service and leadership has been well respected by all members.”

Warwickshire Police Authority is responsible for setting the direction for the police, setting the budget and setting the targets for the force on an annual basis.

Cllr John Vereker and Steve Nicklin were today also appointed as vice chairman for Warwickshire Police Authority.
