RUGBY businesses have welcomed the start of free weekend parking at Newbold Road Car Park.
The scheme began on Sunday and will be trialled for three months in an effort to support business in the town centre.
Aftab Gaffar, operations director for town centre management firm Rugby First, said: “I’m absolutely delighted with Rugby Borough Council’s plan to run this three month trial. It’s tough out there and initiatives like this will help businesses, and make a real difference to the town centre economy in these challenging times.”
Sean Lawson, head of environmental services at Rugby Borough Council, said: “We appreciate it is very difficult out there for local business owners and their customers at the moment. By introducing the three month trial we hope people will take advantage of the free car parking, save money on fuel by shopping local and support their town centre at the same time.”
Liz Twynholm of Joto Hobbies in Lawrence Sheriff Street, said: “Initiatives aimed at bringing more customers into the town centre can make a real difference to our bottom line and I applaud Rugby Borough Council’s efforts.”
Louise Harvey of Serenity in Sheep Street said: “Free town centre car parking can make a real difference and allows the town centre to compete on a level footing with some of the out of town retail parks.”
