A free secondary school has been approved and the trust behind it hope to have things up and running in Rugby by September 2016.

The Department for Education has given the go-ahead for Rugby Free Secondary School to enter the ‘pre-opening phase’.

The school will be run by the trust behind Rugby Free Primary School, which is due to open at Central Parlk, Rugby, later this month.

Rugby Free Secondary School will include a sixth form and has been approved to open with an initial intake of 180 Year 7 pupils.

The school will grow to reach full capacity of 1,260 students in 2022, and the trusts says it will help to address the current and accelerating need for high quality secondary school places in Rugby.

Rugby Free Secondary School will be a ‘STEMM’ school with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and an additional focus on the study of Music.

A number of potential sites have already been identified for the school and the Department for Education and Education Funding Agency are now working to secure one of these as soon as possible.

Lead Proposer Tom Legge said: “The team and I are thrilled that Rugby Free Secondary School has been approved into the pre-opening phase and that we are now able to progress our plans with the Department for Education and the Education Funding Agency to make our vision a reality.

“The support we have received from parents and the wider community has been superb and we look forward to working together to ensure that every student achieves their maximum potential in a safe, supportive, stimulating, inspiring and high achieving school.”

Applications are made to the free school are in addition to the usual Local Authority process for 2016 only. This means that applicants may be offered two places, one from Rugby Free Secondary School and one through their Local Authority. They can make their final choice of school after offers are made in March 2016.

Admissions for Year 7 places at Rugby Free Secondary School for 2016 will open shortly.
