The Hillmorton branch of The Royal British Legion has done another powerful tribute to the fallen of the First World War.

With today marking the 100th anniversary of the beginning of The Battle of The Somme, branch members have put together a special tribute at the war memorial in the village centre, also incorporating the nearby bench, pictured here.

A notice of dedication accompanying the display says: “Hillmorton remembers 100 years The Battle of The Somme...

“The Battle of The Somme, also known as The Somme Offensive, was a battle of the First World War fought by the armies of the British and French empires against the German Empire.

“It took place between July 1 and November 18, 1916 on both sides of The River Somme in France.

“It was one of the largest battles of The First World War, in which more than 1,000,000 men were wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history.”
