IT began in the Asda doughnut aisle and ended with the newly married Mr and Mrs Harris walking down the aisle of St Andrew’s Church as husband and wife.
Chris Harris and Karen Simmonds got married on Saturday - just a few months after she proposed with a doughnut in Asda.
Karen said: “It was an absolutely amazing day. It went exactly as we planned and everyone was so happy.”
Earlier this year Karen took the leap year tradition on February 29 as a chance to make a bold gesture to show how much she loved her partner of three years. She invited friends, family and the Advertiser to the cakes and bakery aisle of Asda in Rugby where she popped the question to a surprised Chris.
Chris, who is known to enjoy a doughnut or two, was given a miniature doughnut as an engagement ring by his wife-to-be. Luckily this was later replaced with a white gold diamond for Karen.
Since then the couple have been busy planning their big day - Saturday, September 8.
Female members of the bridal party walked to church from Karen’s beauty salon Sun Days in Church Street to St Andrew’s, while the men walked from Wetherspoons in Castle Street.
After the ceremony the couple and their 140 guests made their way to the reception venue at Thornfield Bowling Club off Bruce Williams Way.
Everyone enjoyed a buffet and a disco into the evening.
There was also a big plate of jam doughnuts for everyone to tuck in to.
Karen said: “We had to have doughnuts didn’t we? It was a really fun day and everyone was very relaxed.”
During the reception, Chris surprised Karen with a trip of a lifetime to Australia in January for their honeymoon which they had been saving for.
However they are spending a few restful days in Weymouth this week as a mini honeymoon.
The couple, who have five children between them, will begin married life at their home in Manor Road, Rugby.
Karen’s chief bridesmaid was her daughter Amber, alongside other bridesmaids Steph Bird, Jade Martin and Matilda Robinson-D’Mello.
Her oldest and middle son Chris and Jason gave Karen away, whilst youngest son Ryan was an usher along with Chris’s son Tom.
Aaron Embley was the best man and the mistress of ceremony was Joanne Wesley.
