WHAT IS IT? Legendary jazz musician Hugh Masekela and Ayanna.
WHERE AND WHEN IS IT? Friday 29 June at 8pm at Warwick Arts Centre.
WHAT DO THEY SAY ABOUT IT? Hugh Masekela has covered the globe and played with just about every top star you can think of - he’s behind a number of international hits and sold several million albums.
Earlier in his career the single Grazing in the Grass topped the Rolling Stones’ Jumping Jack Flash in the US charts and won him a Grammy.
Another hit Bring Him Back Home became the anthem for Nelson Mandela’s world tour following his release from prison and his recent albums have all gone platinum. Nicknamed The Man with the Horn, Masekela is a living legend, a genius musician and great performer who, according to fans, is even getting even better with age.
His guest, Ayanna, was the first non-American to win the legendary Amateur Night Live at the Harlem Apollo, whose beguiling vocals skip and swing over intimate, honey-sweet cello.
For an introduction to her unique style of using her cello as a percussion as well as stringed instrument, it’s well worth searching for her Myspace page and listening to her version of The Police’s Roxanne.
WHAT THE CRITICS SAY
“(Masekela is) a musician of phenomenal grace and power, still blessed with a voice that can strip the leaves from the trees” - The Independent
“Ayanna has to be heard to be believed” - Time Out
