A HILLMORTON girl made a splash at Rugby School swimming pool on Friday and raised nearly £300 for other children who are also deaf.

Katie Hipwell, ten, swam 80 lengths of the pool in aid of Coventry and Warwickshire Deaf Children’s Society.

She completed the swim in 13 minutes.

The Paddox Primary School pupil wanted to do something to help others.

Her mum Caroline said: “Katie was six when she was confirmed deaf.

“For the first years of her life we had to lip read but now she uses a hearing aid.”

She paid tribute to her daughter and the way she copes with her disability.

“It has been hard at times but Katie is brilliant,” added Caroline.

“I am so proud of her.”

Katie’s original target for the challenge was £50 - so far she has raised £295.40.

After the swim, Katie said: “I don’t know whether I’m more proud that I’ve done it or that I’ve raised so much money.”
