Police have begun a murder investigation following the death of a man on Newton Road near Rugby.
The man was found in an abandoned vehicle with gunshot wounds in Newton Road, near Newton village, following a call from a member of the public at around 11.45am today (Friday) and was pronounced dead at the scene.
One car left the road while two vehicles were seen making off along Newton Road towards Newton village and the A5 road. The two driving off were described as being a silver hatchback and a maroon or red, metallic-coloured car and police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen or heard these vehicles in the area at this time.
Two arrests have been made in relation to this incident and enquiries are ongoing.
Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen these vehicles to contact 101 quoting incident 155.
Sue Wagstaffe, relief manager at St Thomas’s Cross pub, which is opposite the closed off road, said punters had been discussing the incident all day.
She added: “People have been phoning up asking if it’s safe to come for a drink and wondering what’s going on.
“There’s a lot of speculation and no one is really sure what’s happened.
“I saw two ambulances and several police cars drive up the road earlier and since then it’s been blocked off to traffic.
“One man came in earlier and said he wasn’t allowed to walk up the road to get to his house.”
Police would like to hear from anyone who saw any cars driving at speed and erratically in the Newton area, in particular on the A5.
