A fire at a scrapyard in Rugby is now under control, according to Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Smoke could be seen billowing across the town following the fire at Charles Trent in Avon Mill Lane, off Newbold Road.

Emergency services were called to the scene 12.40pm.

Five fire crews from Rugby, Lutterworth, Binley and Southam attended, as well as additional support from two water carriers.

The fire was put out within an hour of crews arriving on the scene.

A spokesman for Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The fire started in a workshop at Charles Trent.

“It was a 10x25 metre commercial property. The fire spread from the workshop and it is believed some tyres caught fire.”

The environmental protection unit is on the scene, as well as the Environment Agency.

A spokesman said: “It looks worse than it is because of the smoke. The fire has now been contained. It will now be a case of damping down.”

Rugby Borough Council assisted the fire service with water supply, while the Environment Agency were called in to assess the River Avon.

Roads in the area remain open but there are delays.

A spokesman for Rugby Borough Council said: “Motorists have been advised to avoid Newbold Road. The road remains open, but traffic has been slowed due to hoses being laid across the road as firefighters use the water supply from the council’s Hunters Lane depot.

“Residents living nearby have been advised to stay indoors and close all windows. All residents have been urged to stay away from the area.

“The Environment Agency has no concerns about the risk of air pollution from the fire, but plans to monitor the River Avon amid concern over possible pollutants in the run-off water from tackling the blaze.”

The fire is not believed to be suspicious, according to Warwickshire Police.

Charles Trent Ltd said it would not be commenting on the fire.
