Couple dance through life for 60 years together

"You share the good and bad times": Leon and Shirley Tavinor

A devoted couple who said “being friends and sharing everything” was the key to a happy marriage will be celebrating 60 years together on August 14.

Leon and Shirley Tavinor met at a dance at Playfair in Rugby when he was on leave from the RAF.

Mrs Tavinor, 78, said: “I first met Leon at the dance and he was there with his sister.

“I didn’t see him for a little while after that but then we saw each other again at another dance and that’s when we hit it off.

“Thinking about it, it was probably me that asked him to dance!”

The couple married at the Holy Trinity Church in Clifton Road, Rugby.

Mrs Tavinor said: “We were lucky that it was dry on our wedding day.

“All our family and friends were there and it was lovely.

“We went on our honeymoon to Bournemouth in Leon’s father’s car and on the drive down there it broke down.

“He managed to fix it himself and we arrived about 3am.

“The first thing I said was ‘I want to see the sea’, so we did.

“It didn’t matter that it was late.”

Mr and Mrs Tavinor have three children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

They attended their grandson Scott’s wedding last weekend and said it was a very proud and special day.

The couple are members of the National Trust and enjoy walking, dancing and history.

Speaking of their time together, Mr Tavinor, 82, said: “I think the secret to a happy marriage is being friends and sharing everything.

“You share the good and the bad times.”

Mrs Tavinor added: “If you have a disagreement you have to learn to forget it.

“You’ll be talking in the next five minutes as though nothing has happened.

“That’s why it works.”
