Female rescued from river in Brownsover

Emergency services were called out to the Brownsover area last night (Thursday), after receiving reports that somebody was in the River Avon.

A spokesperson for Warwickshire Fire and Rescue service said they were alerted at 8.20pm to “a female who had thrown herself into the river at the rear of Tescos on Leicester Road” and two fire engines with specialist water rescue equipment for Rugby Fire Station were dispatched.

Upon arrival, fire fighters, ambulance crews and police, including the police helicopter, were involved in trying to locate the female and were at the scene for two and a half hours.

She was eventually found caught in undergrowth near the weir and rescued by fire fighters using wet suits and water resuce equipment, before being handed over to the care of Warwickshire Police and the ambulance service.

An ambulance service spokesperson confirmed that the female was “breathing and conscious” when she was found.

She did not sustain any serious injuries but was treated for the effects of cold and taken to University Hospital Coventry.
