Increase in sales expected at Rugby Farmers Market following horsemeat scandal

Traders from Rugby’s Farmers Market are hoping that the current horsemeat scandal will see an increase in visitors and sales.

As more people are now seeking reassurance about where meat is sourced, it is hoped that footfall will increase at the market.

The Farmers Market, held the last Thursday of each month, in Market Place has been running successfully now since 2002.

William Rouse, market manager, said: “Although early days we hope to see an increase in Farmers Market customers in the wake of the horsemeat scandal. The market allows visitors to talk directly to those growing or producing the foods. They can be sure of what they are buying along with its quality. All products are clearly labelled, fresh, competitively priced and people buy in the knowledge that they are supporting local producers.”

John Young, a volunteer for Garden Organic and Warwickshire County Council, who runs a stall promoting growing your own vegetables said: “The market is so important as it allows consumers to talk and buy from a local source from people who have reared the food they are selling and can provide information and evidence of its source and traceability. No bad labelling here.”
