The shooting of Jordon Banton has rocked the community of Newton.
Residents were concerned when they heard sirens and a police helicopter on Friday.
But they soon learned of the news of the death of the 23-year-old.
Ruth Hughes, who lives in Newton, said the whole village was surprised by what had happened.
She said: “It is horribly shocking and we didn’t realise how close it was to us.
“It makes it even more frightening when it’s so near.
“We were out in the garden and heard the police helicopter above.
“We heard bits and pieces about what had happened but the term shooting was used quite early on.”
Mrs Hughes knows the man who discovered Mr Banton’s body on Newton Road.
She said: “It must have been a terrible shock to see something of that nature.
“He was very shaken but a friend in the village looked after him at her house and made sure he was OK.”
Mrs Hughes said the area was oddly quiet on Friday afternoon.
She added: “It seemed very strange that there wasn’t any traffic going past.
“We hadn’t realised lots of roads were closed.
“We had around 11 calls from friends and family asking if we were OK because of how near to us it was.”
