Kind strangers help Rugby woman thrown from wheelchair after getting stuck in pothole

Joy Sorrell was being pushed across Hillmorton Road by her husband Dave on their way to the Railway Club when a wheel on her wheelchair got stuck in a pothole.

The 60-year-old was flung from the chair and suffered cuts and bruises to her face.

Kind strangers rushed to help the couple after the incident on Sunday evening and stayed with them until an ambulance arrived.

The couple’s daughter, Helen Black, wants to thank those who helped her parents.

“It is lovely to know that there are kind and considerate people out there who are willing to help,” she said.

“Thank you to everyone who stopped to help my mum and dad. Some people brought blankets to keep mum warm while waiting for the ambulance and others gave her umbrellas as it was pouring down with rain.”

Those who stopped to help included Karl Jones, Angela Bayliss and Bethany Brown. Karl kindly took Joy’s wheelchair home to keep it safe while the couple went to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.

Joy spent several days in hospital recovering from the incident but Helen said she is ‘on the mend’.
