A former soldier who died during a fight in Rugby town centre was lawfully killed, an inquest has concluded.
David Ryding died on July 8 this year during an altercation in Market Place near the taxi rank on July 7.
Assistant coroner John Ryan yesterday (Tuesday) issued a conclusion of lawful killing following a two day inquest at the Warwickshire Justice Centre in Leamington Spa.
The inquest heard that 22-year-old Ben Hartwell punched Mr Ryding to the floor after the former army boxer started a fight with him.
My Ryding hit his head on the ground and died in hospital the next day after his life support machine was switched off.
Mr Hartwell told the inquest that he never meant to hurt Mr Ryding and that he was trying to defend himself.
Mr Hartwell was initially arrested on suspicion of murder but the charge was dropped when the Crown Prosecution Service decided that Mr Hartwell had acted in self defence.
